Thank you, players and friends for participating in the CATA tennis tournament. Although it was our first year, it seemed like the Asian tennis community has been together for a while. There were many new faces, and the level of tennis continued to rise. Mother Nature cooperated. The Arvada Tennis Center was a great facility!
This year we clearly witnessed some great exciting development. The bar has been raised in all brackets! On the men’s singles, Sean Hoang, a newcomer and high school varsity tennis player, took the title with sensational level of play. On one particular point, Sean executed a winner shot between the legs as he was chasing down a deep potent lob by his Finals opponent, Son Ho. Just like on TV! On the men’s doubles side, after a long split, Alex and Buu Le re-teamed up, and totally dominated the doubles game. The two formed a wall at the net and were virtually unpassable.

On the Women’s singles A bracket, Lisa Tran continued to exhibit tenacious and tough tennis, and was joined by a newcomer, Kristeen Dehning, where the two battled over three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-1) of eye-pleasing tennis! On the Womens Doubles bracket, the finals match was a grinder and lasted a long long time. Every point seemed to consist of 20+ rallies! The match ended up very tight, but the players hung in there til the end and were cheered by the large spectator group from Broomfield and Aurora!
On the Womens Singles B, we have a first time champion and finalist, Thao Phan and Jennifer Bui! We also tried to employ double elimination draw, and Mary Hoang received honorable mention for her attempt to challenge one of the finalists, but was not able to play due to 2-hour behind schedule.
Hai recognizing Mary, Jennifer, and Thao.
On the Junior bracket, Alex Ho successfully defended his title with a dramatic gut wrenching tie-breaker Finals match against John Beehan. Alex was up 6-1 but then suffered stomach cramp but hung in there and prevailed at the tie-breaker. Courtesy of Justin Nguyen, this was the only Finals match with an on-court referee and ball boy :-)! We had one girl junior, Chi-Lan, who is to be commanded for her bravery to face the boys. Other junior boys, Nicholas, Andrew, and Justin, were all good sport.
The other brackets, Mens singles B, C, Doubles B, C, and mixed Doubles, were all exciting as well. More on these players and matches on subsequent pages. Everyone seemed to like the pre-published draws that gave them heads up of who and when to play! Down side was that we could not accommodate walk-in folks, which were only a few.
